Devenir Estudio works between matter and the digital, until they stop being two things. Founded by Adriana Cagigas and Gonzalo Álvarez.

About Us

At Devenir Estudio we work between matter and the digital, until they stop being two separate crafts. We first understand the knowledge a project already holds, and then build around it the brand, the product and the digital system it is missing. Based in Madrid, we work with projects from anywhere. Our clients include: Deyi, Hemper y Wool4Life.

Founders

Adriana Cagigas

Founder, Director of Designand Business Strategy

She researches the relationship between craft, culture and textile futures, and leads the cultural research behind every project. Her work draws on a teaching practice and on doctoral research in progress on textile heritage. She makes sure each client's own knowledge is understood, documented and told with rigour.

Gonzalo Álvarez

Founder, Director of Designand Digital Development

He works where the physical object meets the digital environment: product design, identity, and web and app development. He makes sure that what a brand is stays intact when it moves into a digital environment, and that the whole system works technically.

Principles

We honour the path already travelled. Whole generations tested, corrected and refined a body of knowledge before we arrived. We start from that inheritance with respect and bring it into every decision.

We question what is given. We look at every process from scratch and seek our own way when the obvious one falls short. That is where our creativity lives: in asking how things are done and daring to do them differently.

We seek coherence between what we say and what we do, inside and out. Inside, with the team, the processes, the materials. Outside, with whoever receives the result. That is where real impact holds.

Every decision answers to a reason we can explain and defend to anyone who asks. That why gives weight to what we do, and allows the project to evolve in the future.

2025–2026Mota del Cuervo, Cuenca

01/07

Wool4Life recovers wool from native Spanish breeds — today largely discarded by the conventional textile industry — and returns it to its place through the craft process: full traceability from grazing to finished piece, in-house washing and spinning, artisan production in Mota del Cuervo.

For this project we developed the complete system: new products, sensory experiences, brand identity, and the manual that keeps its application coherent over time. The underlying story — livestock heritage, craft and territory as value — shapes commercial and product strategy decisions as much as communication.

Enhebrar

Ethnographic and photographic editorial research

2025Guizhou, China

02/07

Enhebrar documents the moment when a body of knowledge on the verge of being lost passes once again through the eye of a new generation. In the mountains of Guizhou, the Dong community sustains one of the most complete textile systems still standing: spinning, loom weaving, traditional local dyeing. Fibre, dye and territory belong to a single cycle — nothing enters the cloth from outside, nothing leaves it as waste.

The research records the bond between landscape, kitchen, loom and people as a shared metabolism, following the concrete thread of transmission — from mother to daughter, from generation to generation — at the exact moment that thread risks breaking.

Enhebrar

Ethnographic research, immersive teaching programme, exhibition design and curation, academic research

2025Guizhou, China and Dimad, Matadero Madrid

03/07

This project represents the studio’s most academic side: Enhebrar is an example of the comprehensive development of an immersive, educational experience alongside academic research, exhibition design and curation.

The programme is designed to close three gaps that design education rarely tackles together: between theory and practice, between disciplines and generations, and between designers and the territory that sustains the materials they work with. The learning outcome fosters a designer profile able to move between research, co-creation and narrative, with a range that reaches well beyond a single technical function.

The project comprises the design and development of a 30-day immersive experience in Guizhou, the digital documentation of the setting, an academic article summarising the project’s results, and the design and curation of an exhibition at Matadero Madrid in collaboration with UDIT.

Inteligencia Natural

Product design and brand experience

2023Royal Botanic Garden, Madrid

04/07

A capsule collection designed for Hemper, a regenerative fashion brand, for its autumn/winter season presentation under the concept “Natural Intelligence”. The collection is built on natural fibres and dyes worked by artisans in Nepal and China.

The event’s staging was organised into four themed spaces — dyeing, weaving, the act of weaving as language, and the tea ritual as a metaphor for the life cycle — translating the brand’s creative process into a physical journey for visitors.

Blueshift: Infinite CycleStage costume design

Costume design for contemporary dance

2024Shanghai International Dance Centre

05/07

Costume design for Blueshift: Infinite Cycle, a contemporary dance piece by choreographer Li Kehua. Made in Dong cloth, hand-spun and hand-dyed by the women artisans of the Deyi Living cooperative in Guizhou, with whom we worked to develop the project.

W4L Loom (pre-beta v0.1)

Design and development of a digital tool for Wool4Life

2026Madrid

06/07

Loom is a virtual loom app that lets anyone understand and practise weaving from home. The app translates the most basic textile theory — how a loom is set up and how it works — into a digital space, documenting and digitising at full scale every part of Wool4Life’s physical low-warp loom.

The aim keeps the hand at the centre while end users become co-designers, weaving digitally what they acquire as a physical product.

SPATIUM

Product design and developmentConceptual researchDigital development

2025Revelations, Beijing

07/07

The project starts from the etymology of “to inhabit” (from the Latin habitare, “to have repeatedly”) to ask what it means to inhabit a space, an object or a garment: a continued presence built on repetition. Drawing on Heidegger — to build is already to dwell — the collection treats clothing and space as extensions of being, chosen again and again as an act of presence.

From there, the product design considers today’s human condition as a hybrid reality where the physical and the digital merge while each keeps its place: technology extends the body. The materiality of each garment — its design, its construction — is a statement about how each person chooses to inhabit their humanity.
